What is vedic chanting?
In 2008 UNESCO recognized vedic chanting as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
Vedic chanting is the traditional way of reciting the veda (holy book of Hinduism) and consists of mantras in Sanskrit. According to the Hindu tradition, they were created by the divine and they were heard by the ṛṣi (ancient great yogis of India) in a state of meditation. That's why vedic chants are considered sacred. They date back approximately 3500 years and were passed down orally and in their original form from master to disciple to the present day. Accurate pronunciation is essential, since in the veda it is said that vedic mantras have to be chanted in a specific way so they can have a beneficial effect on us.
ABOUT US
Alicia Corral y Ricardo Passos
Our work together
This musical project is a fusion between vedic chants recited in a traditional way and instruments from various parts of the world, such as China, Morocco, Iran, etc. Vedic chants are traditionally recited a cappella from ancient times to the present day. They have 3 notes (udātta, anudātta and svarita) and they are bound to certain traditional rules of pronunciation. Our proposal is to endow the chants with musicality and create a language in which the tradition of recited vedic mantras and a transcultural musical sound can coexist together.
The aim of maintaining the purity of the original vedic chanting and using rhythms and melodies of different cultures, gives birth to our humble tribute to veda-s in a more musical way.

Dhrupad singing by Ricardo Passos
WORKSHOP
Dhrupad is the oldest surviving form of Indian classical music, having originated in the singing of Vedic hymns. Apart from being a highly developed classical art, it is also primarily a form of worship, in which offerings are made to the divine through sound or «Nada». Dhrupad can be seen as a meditation, a form of yoga based on the knowledge of nadis and chakras and also as a performative art that portrays a vast universe of human emotions. It is a deeply spiritual and meditative music.

Konnakol percussion by Ricardo Passos
WORKSHOP
Konnakol is a rhythmic system from South of India where polyrhythm and rhythmic displacement are studied in depth through different types of composition, allowing a broad mastery of rhythm, as well as its possibilities for groove, accompaniment and improvisation. The learning method consists of a system of memorization of onomatopoeic syllables (Takadimi, Takita, Tadigenatom, etc.) in which the musician is able to sing with a clear mental image of everything he plays.
